A COORDENAÇÃO SIMULTÂNEA DE DIFERENTES CANAIS COMO ESTRATÉGIA DE DISTRIBUIÇÃO ADOTADA POR EMPRESAS DA AVICULTURA DE POSTURA AgEcon
Mizumoto, Fabio Matuoka; Zylbersztajn, Decio.
This study investigates the reasons which lead the companies to keep simultaneous vertical integrated, third part and hybrid distribution channels. Companies establish different coordination structures, the organizational arrangements, which determine how the agents involved cooperate to the development of distribution activities, according to Transaction Cost Economics and Dynamic Competence. Even choosing different distribution channels, why the company does not establish one single organizational arrangement? What factors may justify the establishment of different arrangements? Possible explanations to those questions have been pointed out in multiple distribution channels. The empirical research indicates that firms establish multiple efficient...

Building Supply‐Systems from Scratch: The Case of Biodiesel Chain in Brazil AgEcon
Watanabe, Kassia; Zylbersztajn, Decio.
The purpose of this article is to study the transplantation of complex agro‐industrial systems. The main focus is the analysis of the biodiesel system in Brazil using the Agro‐Chain System approach (AGS). The AGS analysis considers the institutional and organizational environments and verifies how a governance structure evolves as the institutional environment changes. The methodology used is a case study of the biodiesel chain system in the State of Minas Gerais – Brazil. This local system developed as a result of governmental incentives. The present study’s contribution is that it identifies the main obstacles to implementing agro chains and networks involving regions and actors that do not have previous history of productive organizations.

Coordenação do sistema da carne bovina no Reino Unido: implicações da rastreabilidade e da tecnologia de informação AgEcon
Machado, Rosa Teresa Moreira; Zylbersztajn, Decio.
This paper discusses the traceability concept in the food business. Based on the transaction costs economics, it describes the adoption of traceability mechanisms in the UK beef market and examines the effects on the governance mechanisms in the production and distribution chain. The basic hypothesis is that, in the absence of information technology (IT), strictly coordinated mechanisms will occur. As the use of IT spreads, a decrease in information asymmetry and, consequently, more flexible governance structures may be observed.

CUSTOS DE MENSURAÇÃO E GOVERNANÇA NO AGRONEGÓCIO: UM ESTUDO DE CASOS MÚLTIPLOS NO SISTEMA AGROINDUSTRIAL DA CARNE BOVINA AgEcon
Caleman, Silvia Morales de Queiroz; Sproesser, Renato Luiz; Zylbersztajn, Decio.
Measurement Cost Theory (MCT) and Transaction Cost Economics (TCE) are both theoretical frameworks applied to the study of economic transactions. In the MCT, the attributes’ measurability is a key variable for identifying efficient modes of governance. The application of MCT to agri systems coordination is the context of this work, whose objective is to identify the governance mechanisms adopted in the beef chain. The transaction attributes of five beef chain subsystems and their degree of measurability (MCT) were analyzed according to TCE. An increasing gradient of coordination in function of the increase of asset specificity was observed, moving from one extreme of the spot market, exemplified by the commodity subsystem, to vertical integration,...

Determinantes da Escolha de Arranjos Institucionais: Evidências na Comercialização de Fertilizantes para Soja AgEcon
Leme, Maristela Franco Paes; Zylbersztajn, Decio.
Transactions among agribusiness agents are not exclusively carried out on the market, being also governed by alternative types of institutional arrangements, some of which determined upon contractual agreement. In the fertilizers sector, the companies intensified the offer of input packages to farmers, more specifically to soybean producers, object of this article. In order to acquire the fertilizers, these producers may choose to use their own financial resources, to obtain resources through financing with third parties, or they may recur to the said packages, which include soybean and financial resources in addition to the fertilizers, referred by the soybean producers to as “exchange”, since they acquire fertilizer paying with soybean for future...

Determinantes dos arranjos contratuais1: O caso da transação produtor-processador de carne bovina no Uruguai AgEcon
Mondelli, Mario P.; Zylbersztajn, Decio.
What are the determinants of the commercial channel choice in the beef producers-processors transactions? The question refers to the coordination and production control problem associated to changes in consumer’s awareness of specific attributes in food products. Two contractual arrangements coexist in this transaction: direct-contracting and broker-induced transactions Transaction Cost Economic offers helpful insights to understand the reason for the development and adaptations of different contractual arrangement moved by transaction cost economizing perspective. The empirical analysis is focused in the Uruguayan beef agro-industrial system. Analysis integrates (i) institutional and organizational changes in the beef industry; (ii) based on the analysis...

Explaining Agro-Industrial Contract Breaches: The Case of Brazilian Tomatoes Processing Industry AgEcon
Zylbersztajn, Decio; Nadalini, Lygia B..
Three hundred small tomato growers located in Brazilian northeast states, supplied a processing industry. In view of the large number of contract hazards and weak enforcement of clauses, managers have decided to move to the Midwest, where a reduced number of larger farmers have been contracted. The industry blamed high transaction costs due to the weak mechanism of public enforcement of property rights. The industry blamed some farmers of selling the product at the market for fresh consumption. Also, farmers blamed the industry for taking advantage of asymmetric information related to quality. This study presents an analysis of contract architecture and an evaluation of effects of transaction costs related variables on the likelihood of contract breaches....

Fragile Social Norms: (Un) Sustainable Exploration of Forest Products AgEcon
Zylbersztajn, Decio.
The exhaustion of natural resources is a central problem in the international agenda. The particular case of Amazon forest is at the top on the international environmental debate. Two related problems are keys to be considered in the discussion of sustainable development in this region. First the predatory use of the natural resources of the forest mainly timber and genetic resources. Second the recognition of the existence of a population of around 20 million inhabitants in the region defined as “Legal Amazon Area”, aiming the improvement on the living conditions, enhancement of income level and acceleration of development. How to match both objectives is a puzzle faced by the present generation. The region is populated by initiatives of international...

From Contracts to Networks: New Directions in the Study of Governance of Agro‐Food‐Energy Networks AgEcon
Zylbersztajn, Decio.
The debate about the governance of complex systems of production represents a rich branch of the literature of applied organization theory. The particular application to agro‐related networks is a relevant example since agriculture plays new roles in modern society. The core of the analysis is centered in the rationale for allocation of residual decision rights and distribution of the rights regarding the value created. Contributions based in transaction cost economics, resource‐based view, dynamic competences, and incomplete contract theory explore different dimensions related to the allocation of property rights. The question of how joint strategies are defined, and how value added (or subtracted) is shared among network players is still relevant....

Governance in the East Indian Company AgEcon
Hofstede, Gert Jan; Zylbersztajn, Decio.
(Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, the Dutch East India Company), one of the world’s major players in the international food market of the 17th and 18th centuries. Can the experiences of the VOC teach lessons that today’s food production networks may take to heart? There are three domains in which changes might have occurred since the times of the VOC that could be relevant to this question. These are the people themselves, the rules of the game that can be captured by the term governance, and context factors. The article will investigate all three. As far as the people are concerned it will look at factors such as worker conditions, attitudes, and culture in general. In the area of governance the paper will consider contract enforcement and coercion...

Quebra dos Contratos de Soja Verde AgEcon
Rezende, Christiane Leles; Zylbersztajn, Decio.
